The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a major prize-giving event nears, you'll find a demand to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games in the world and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier game development, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
