Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
